许鞍华导演大学念文学时主修诗歌，感其解忧纾困，于是便一偿多年心愿，好好拍下香港的诗文风景。 电影主要分为三个部分，第一部分是记录许鞍华导演亲自拜访多位香港诗人好友，如淮远、饮江、邓阿蓝、马若等会友论诗；并借用资料影像及照片，追怀已然离逝的西西和也斯。而整部电影的重点就落在第二部分已移居深圳，性格自由率性的诗人黄灿然及第三部分在台湾忙于讲学兼顾家庭，积极入世的诗人廖伟棠。香港诗或香港诗人宛如边缘的小草，在生活压迫挣扎的同时，展现出顽强的生命力。
